Examples of day trips we have done from the base town that we stayed in. You can add an interesting town to your itinerary from any base town you stay in. Day trips should be within a reasonable driving distance. With planning, you can see 2 or 3 towns in the same day. For example, Murano and Burano is easily done in one day from Venice as is Pienza and Montepulciano from Montalcino. We have found Greve in Chianti and Montalcino to be great bases for exploring central Italy by car.
Any town you wish to explore, do research and find all the sights to see. For instance Siena has a beautiful must see duomo (pay the few Euros to see it), shopping, lunch, the main square etc. In Cortona see Saint Marguerita in the alter of the church at the top of Cortona! You can add other towns that may be of interest and from these highlighted bases, you can get to most of Italy!

Do not stay in Portofino. Portofino is small with nothing to do and is more expensive then neighboring towns. Take the boat to see Portofino, spend a morning and get out. There is more to do and see in Santa Marguerita and its cheaper. Plenty of nice places to eat too. Access to cinque terre by train also.
